A Foley catheter uses a balloon at the tip, which is then inflated with water that has been sterilized. The balloons are available in two different sizes: 5 cc and 30 cc. They are normally made out of rubber. The Coudé catheter has a curved tip design. This design feature makes it easier to pass the catheter through the urethra. A Robinson catheter is very flexible and it is used for the short-term drainage of urine. There is no balloon on its tip such as can be found on the Foley. For this reason, the Robinson catheter will not be able to remain in place without assistance.
