How to Work With an Intermittent Catheter

Part of our normal bodily functions is expelling waste. When urine isn’t eliminated properly, it can cause damage to the kidneys and bladder not to mention infection. In those cases when the bladder needs help to be drained, a catheter is used. This is a small plastic tube that is inserted directly into the urethra tract up to the bladder. When used correctly, the catheter will drain the fluids from the bladder. This is the most effective and efficient method for the removal of urine in the bladder. When a patient is allowed to use the catheter on their own, then this is referred to as intermittent catheterization.

The difference between medical supplies like intermittent catheters and long term catheters is a matter of patient management. With the intermittent catheters the patient themselves (or someone equally trained) does the insertion and removal of the catheter tube when needed. Only the patient can determine that specific time.
